Gilas held off Chinese Taipei to sweep start of WC qualifiers

Gilas Pilipinas found their groove in the final canto to stop Chinese Taipei, 90-83, to sweep the first window of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers last November 27 (Manila time) at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines.

Gilas improved to 2-0 in Group B and will be taking on Australia in Adelaide during the 2nd window in February next year, Chinese-Taipei dropped to 0-2.

The Filipino dribblers staged a comeback from 14-points down in the early moments of the game as the starters played sluggishly.

Big man June Mar Fajardo led the comeback as he played his best game wearing the national colors while sparkplugs Calvin Abueva and Kiefer Ravena provided the hustle.

Jayson Castro again made a mark by converting clutch baskets while running the point enroute to the victory pacing Gilas with 20 points.

Fajardo added 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks while Matthew Wright, exploded in the fourth quarter, finishing with 11 markers.

The Taiwanese were led by naturalized forward Quincy Davis III with 20 points and nine rebounds despite fouling out in the game.

Philippines (90) – Castro 20, Fajardo 17, Wright 11, Pogoy 11, Ravena 9, Abueva 8, Blatche 6, Norwood 5, Aguilar 3.

Chinese-Taipei (83) – Davis 20, Chou Y. 17, Huang 16, Liu 7, Tsai 6, Lee 6, Chou P.C. 4, Chou P.H. 3, Chen 2, Chiang 2, Hu 0, Lu 0.
