2014 WNBA Finals Preview: Chicago Sky vs. Phoenix Mercury

This year’s WNBA Finals will feature one team going for its third title while the other one is making its first Finals appearance in franchise history.

After sweeping the Los Angeles Sparks in the first round, the Phoenix Mercury eliminated the Minnesota Lynx in the Western Conference Championship to earn their spot in the Finals. In the decisive game three, the Mercury outscored the defending WNBA champions 24-11 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Diana Taurasi averaged 23.7 points and 5.7 assists per game in the series to lead the team. Phoenix will look to complete a near-perfect season after setting a WNBA record for most wins in the regular season with 29. A league title could arguably crown them the best team ever.

In comparison to Phoenix’s 29-5 record, the Chicago Sky compiled a record below .500 at 15-19 in the regular season.  Chicago was the lowest seed in the East to advance to the playoffs, but they eliminated the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds on the opposing teams’ home floors to advance to the WNBA Finals. The Sky lost the first game to the Indiana Fever, but came back to win Games 2 and 3 to take the Eastern Conference title. Sylvia Fowles led Chicago in this series, averaging 21.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Elena Delle Donne has been dealing with a back injury this series and only played four minutes in Game 3, but is hopeful she will be better to play full strength in the league finals.

Game 1 of the 2014 WNBA Finals will tip-off Sunday, September 7 at 3:30 p.m. EST in Phoenix.
